What to do before going away!

Embarking on a long journey or extended time away? Whether it’s a much-awaited vacation, a work assignment, or a travel adventure, ensuring your home is ready for your absence is crucial. To make sure your haven remains safe, secure, and well-maintained in your absence, here’s a checklist to tick off before you set off on your adventure:

  1. Arrange for pets

This goes without saying. Make sure those critters are well-fed, watered, and loved while you’re away. If you wish to have someone to take care of your loved ones, whilst you are away, you can always get some help from pet seaters!

  2. Tune up the security systems!

Make sure your alarm or security cameras will take care of the house in an emergency. Ensure the batteries are recharged, and depending on your alarm company, let them know you’re leaving. You can change who they notify during an emergency, but some require it in writing, so plan! If you don’t have an alarm, I highly recommend Tapo, an indoor CCTV which isn’t hardwired and can be easily set up in the afternoon. You can also leave emergency contact information with a neighbor or friend in case they need to reach you in an emergency.

  3. Water indoor plants

If I had a quid for every house plant I killed while I was on vacation because I forgot to water them, I’d be a millionaire! For long vacations, Automatic Watering System! What a plant life changer!!

  4. Deep clean

There’s nothing like coming home to a freshly clean and tidy house. Plus, a deep clean should keep the critters away. Its also important to empty that trash, as you don’t want to come home to a smelly dump!

  5. Empty the fridge of perishables

Be like J0ey. Eat everything that can go bad, or compost the excess grub if you can’t expand your stomach like Joey.

  6. Run the dishwasher

Leaving food to cake onto the dishes for a whole vacation makes me cringe! Make sure you run the dishwasher, dry, and place all the dishes and glasswear in the cardboards and drawers.

  7. Wash bedding and make the bed

The best thing about coming home is crawling into a super fresh, super well-tucked bed. Just try to name something better.

  8. Adjust thermostat

Remember to tweak the thermostat settings to save energy when your home is empty. Just remember to keep it cozy for your pets and any house-sitters. If you’re in a chilly area, avoid setting the temperature too low to prevent pipes from freezing.

  9. Unplug electronics

You can save both energy and money by unplugging electronics and appliances when they’re not in use. Bonus: it helps prevent potential electrical fires too!

  10. Close blinds & lock windows

Prevent lookie-loos by drawing the curtains. While you’re there, make sure the windows are all locked up, and of course, LOCK UP, Duh!!
